  1. SPOT METERING

  3. Spot metering is a very accurate method of determining exposure.
  4. It is also only for the experienced.
  5.  
  6. Most metering systems, and hand meters, determine an average
  7. exposure by reading the general light level reflected by a
  8. subject - or that falling on the subject, which is known as
  9. incident light.

  11. Spot meters can be bought as a separate unit, but many high spec.
  12. cameras have spot metering built in. Some allow several readings
  13. to be taken, and the camera then averages these. Spot metering
  14. reads off an area of subject which will only be 1 or 2% of the
  15. viewfinder area. This is usually defined by a circle in the
  16. centre of the finder.

  18. The skill is picking an area which will reflect light in exactly
  19. the way you require. For example, a white area would tend to
  20. indicate readings leading to general under exposure. A dark area
  21. the opposite. A colour must be recognised that gives the
  22. 'correct' reflection. That is a colour which approximates to an
  23. 18% grey - grass can be quite good.

  27. It is possible to buy a card known as an '18% Grey Card'. Kodak,
  28. for one, manufacture these. If such a card is placed in a
  29. position on which EXACTLY the same light is falling as on the
  30. subject, and a spot reading taken of the card, then that reading
  31. is almost certain to be correct.
